A girl has narrowly escaped critical damage immediately after remaining crushed by a collapsed roof whilst she was asleep – as the horrific incident draws consideration to the dire challenges confronted by renters amid Australia’s housing disaster.
Melissa Ware, 49, from New Zealand, was browsing her sister on the Gold Coast last October when she awoke about 2am to a loud bang and the feeling of an ‘enormous’ fat pinning her to the mattress.
In the pitch black, unable to see what was going on, she began to stress.
‘I couldn’t see anything at all till my sister and her husband opened the doorway to test to come across out what the noise was, and a little bit of light-weight came into the home … they were being shocked to obtain me laying less than anything pleading for assistance,’ Ms Ware told the Courier Mail.

She now struggles to get to slumber as she grapples with stress and anxiety, nightmares, and hypervigilance in the wake of the incident.
But Ms Ware’s furious sister claims the cave in could have been prevented if the landlord had signal off on a lot-needed repairs on the Hollywell house.
She stated she had contacted her rental property manager 8 months earlier about the cracking and sagging ceiling in that bed room – but even however a routine maintenance worker came in to provide a estimate, the issue was not addressed.
