Paint: Odessa Pink by Benjamin Moore. Sofa: Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Hunter. Pillows: Block Store. Toss: Creative Women of all ages. Espresso desk and rug: classic.
On pink paint: We rented flats for several several years, and this household is the initial location we have ever owned. We can eventually make the space just how we want it, so I went for it with the pink! I hoped our living place would be an oasis but also welcoming for the kid crew. Odessa Pink by Benjamin Moore felt right.
Armchairs: vintage from Holler and Squall. Pillows: Block Shop. Rug: vintage from Breuckelen Berber. Bookcases: Developed-in by former homeowners. Ground lamp: Schoolhouse. Desk: CB2. Painting: by Wolf Kahn.
On satisfied reunions: The portray over the desk is by Wolf Kahn, and the portray above the fire is by Emily Mason, his wife. They were buddies with my dad and mom when I was developing up. When my moms and dads obtained divorced, my mom acquired the Emily Mason painting and my dad obtained the Wolf Khan painting. Now, the two paintings are back again jointly in my household.
Print: Amanda Jane Jones. Chair: hand-me-down.
On household heirlooms: We have hand-me-down furnishings from my parents, grandparents and even excellent grandparents. It’s amusing due to the fact it will get challenging to choose them aesthetically. Occasionally I’m like ‘Do I even like that chair?’ But I have such a warm attachment to all the things. We have a giant chest handed down from my wonderful grandmother, and it nonetheless has a slight scent of her perfume, which is so wild. At the time in a while you get a waft.
Paint: Chippendale Rosetone by Benjamin Moore. Rocking chair: classic. Pillow: Sir Madam. Rug: classic from Breuckelen Berber.
On a new chapter: I ran a children’s bookstore, Stories, in Brooklyn for five many years. In 2021, the pandemic experienced taken its toll, and we had to near. When you generate a thing you enjoy, permitting go is so tricky. You have to allow yourself grieve. Specifically when it’s a bodily space that isn’t there any longer, it feels so absent. But figuring out a new journey was pretty healing and handy.
Desk: “My dad’s producing desk.” Lamp: hand-me-down. Bookshelves: crafted-in by earlier house owners.
On the magic of children’s books: My 1st novel arrived out when my older son Felix was born, and I skilled a very confusing identification shift. Just before motherhood, I assumed I was heading to generate fiction for grown ups my complete lifetime. But at the stop of my maternity depart, I experienced this four-month-previous toddler, and I realized, ‘No way can I generate yet another novel.’ I felt shed. But in that time, I truly fell in really like with present-day children’s books. There is so significantly range. A child intrigued in the adventures of a girls’ basketball team or local climate-connected dystopian fantasies can discover great publications that speak to them — publications that are mirrors to aid them truly feel found and windows into other worlds. Which is what led me to open Stories, and from there, publish A Fort on the Moon.
Cupboard: vintage. Lamp: hand-me-down. Bouquets painting: “Was my grandmother’s, painted by her friend Abram Lerner.”
On decorating a major house: We’re nonetheless figuring out the best spots for issues. As a writer, I genuinely like tinkering with sentences, just participating in and shifting text all over. And rearranging the items in our residence feels comparable. Even just the act of carrying out that will make the household really feel cherished and lived in.
Paint: White Dove by Benjamin Moore. Pendant light-weight: Workstead. Dining desk: ABC House. Chairs: classic. Rug: Armadillo.
On a distinctive desk: When Matt and I acquired married, my mother and stepfather gave us this eating table. My mother had gotten an oval eating desk as a marriage ceremony existing, and it was this sort of a source of joy for her. She made use of it for numerous family members dinners and events, so that was her eyesight for us. Our 20th anniversary is this May possibly, and this desk now retains several sweet recollections and family times.
Cupboard and counters: “1990s formica, little one!”
On a key shades: The prior house owners made their kitchen area in the ‘90s and it has a serious classic vibe. When people today walk into the kitchen for the first time, they’re like, ‘Whoa.’ My artist friends say, ‘Never change this!’ while other persons are like, ‘How do you reside in this craziness?’ But it delivers me pleasure. I take pleasure in that the preceding owners genuinely went for it.
Pendant lights and dining desk: still left by prior owners. Chairs: Serena & Lily, “Originally acquired for the Storytelling Lab at Tales.”
On hosting: For large get-togethers, I like placing out a buffet in the kitchen, where by absolutely everyone can support themselves. Then I can stay clear of sensation at the conclusion of the evening like I did not get to have a actual discussion with any individual!
Framed tapestry: family members heirloom. Bookcase: thrifted. Runner: Block Shop.
On spouse and children hangs: We enjoy a good deal of board and card games. We also just listened to all the Harry Potter audiobooks. It was the sweetest night tradition and so cozy in the winter. We also like listening to The Westing Game, a pleasurable murder mystery with a Knives Out vibe.
Paint: Peacock Feathers by Benjamin Moore. Bedding: Dazed but Amazed. Pillow handles: Les Indiennes. Desk lamp: Style and design Within Attain. Night stand: relatives heirloom. Portray of bouquets: by Leanne Shapton.

Picture: by John Pack, from The Olympic Town challenge. Dresser and wardrobe: household heirlooms. Lamp: CB2, related.
On bed room blues: Our bed room seems to be inexperienced in the sunlight and blue at evening I obtain it incredibly peaceful. The boys also ended up deciding upon blues in related but distinct shades — which is in maintaining with them as brothers.
Paint: Ocean City Blue by Benjamin Moore. Beatles print: Wonderful Art Journal. Glow-in-the-dim-stickers: GloPlay. Lamp: Schoolhouse. Bookcase: classic. Ukulele: Les Paul.
On a 9-yr-old’s touch: Dominic put up glow-in-the-dark stars, and he requested a Beatles poster. He performs the ukulele and learned to perform all these Beatles music and Carter family folk tracks. There’s a little something quite, very sweet about a minimal child actively playing people songs.
Paint: In the Twilight by Benjamin Moore. Dresser and lamp: vintage. Pillowcases: Brooklinen, equivalent.
On elevating preteens: My young children are 10 and 14, which is an powerful time of everyday living. As a parent, I have been functioning on genuinely listening and not providing my impression — which is challenging, simply because I have a lot of opinions. But I assume as soon as youngsters get to the preteen a long time, they know how you believe about issues and they really don’t want constant comments. Felix and I as soon as had this instant where by I mentioned, ‘Felix, I’m just a very little concerned…’ And he interrupted me by stating, ‘Mom, you’re basically normally just a minimal anxious.’ So, it’s a perform in development.
Print: An Instruction, by Shawn Fields.
On nostalgic mementos: This print applied to hold in Stories’s storytelling lab, so family members who went to tale time will figure out it. Now it’s in our upstairs hallway and I just appreciate it. It captures the child’s finish absorption in the e-book, even although you cannot truly see their encounter. It provides back again that childhood experience of being in my cozy mattress with a good book.
Calendar: The Dolphin Studio, “I framed the birth months for each of my boys, this is February 2010, when Felix was born.” Chair: hand-me-down. Rug: classic from Breuckelen Berber.
On raising audience: There is a nook at the top of our staircase, exactly where we set a couch and beanbags. With studying, I try out to adhere to each individual child’s guide. There’s normally some matter that they’re obsessed with, and they will just read through and read through and read through — no matter if it’s dinosaurs or graphic novels. I know there’s a ton of stress and anxiety about getting our kids to read through, but I think reading is essentially these a joyful point. Like, we really don’t worry about no matter whether our youngsters will get into Netflix, we just have faith in they’ll take pleasure in it. And publications can be just as pleasurable for young children the moment they get swept up into them.
Thank you so substantially, Maggie! xoxo
P.S. Much more property tours, together with a spaceship condominium and a farmhouse crafted for Black pleasure.
