The Houston region added just 300 jobs in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With the exception of March 2020, when pandemic fears triggered the loss of more than 340,000 jobs in the Houston metropolitan area, this marks the worst April since 2009, which recorded 14,200 job losses. Between 2010 and 2019, the month of April has averaged around 10,000 new jobs added. The region is down 3,400 jobs since the year began, as employment gains this year have not yet been enough to offset January’s job losses, which are typical due to the seasonality associated with the end of the holiday season.
