Arsenal and Liverpool were also interested in the 24-year-old, but the England international has decided to make the move to the Red Devils.

United are now set to make a formal offer to sign Mount as they look to agree a fee with Chelsea.

The west Londoners, who are open to selling the midfielder with his contract to expire in 2024, are said to value him at £80million.

But it’s previously been reported that Erik ten Hag’s side are only willing to offer around £50m.

Academy graduate Mount was consoled by teammate Ben Chilwell during the lap of honour on Sunday after the 1-1 draw against Newcastle.

Mount looked emotional as he applauded his adoring fans at Stamford Bridge.

His final appearance of the season came on April 18 where he played just 13 minutes of the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

A pelvic injury has kept him on the sidelines, but that hasn’t stopped United from looking to secure his services.

Ten Hag recently urged the United board to bring in ‘better players’ as he pleaded for reinforcements.

It is a further boost for United ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final, with the club announcing the contract extension of full-back Diogo Dalot on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea look set to offload a number of high-profile players having given Mateo Kovacic permission to speak to Manchester City.

Shock discussions have taken place, with Kovacic and the Citizens holding positive talks regarding personal terms.

And World Cup winner N’Golo Kante is yet to agree a new contract as fears grow from fans that he will be leaving in the coming weeks.

Chelsea are already looking at what midfielders they could bring in, with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Sporting Lisbon’s Manuel Ugarte two known targets.
