Former UFC fighter Ben Askren fears Conor McGregor’s comeback could go horribly wrong.
‘Notorious’ hasn’t fought since breaking his leg during his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, but he is booked to face Michael Chandler.
McGregor and his next opponent filmed the latest ‘Ultimate Fighter’ season together earlier this year ahead of their fight that is currently without a date, weight, or venue.
UFC president Dana White previously suggested they will clash in December, but more recently hinted that he is struggling to tie down McGregor who is enjoying his life of luxury.
The 34-year-old was spotted partying during Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia last month before downing whiskey at a bare-knuckle boxing event one week later.
Last weekend, McGregor travelled to watch the Monaco Grand Prix and was caught on camera looking a little worse for wear while dancing with pop star Kylie Minogue.
Askren is concerned by the former dual-weight UFC champion’s lack of commitment to training and believes Chandler could badly hurt him when they finally fight.
“There’s a chance [Chandler] is going to kill this dude,” Askren said on the podcast he shares with UFC legend Daniel Cormier.
“There’s a chance he’ll just go boom, put him down, but then he’s going to try some crazy s*** and there’s a chance he might get put down. McGregor hits hard.
“When was the last time you’ve seen a training video of Conor McGregor?
“Every video I see, he’s partying, he’s dancing, he’s drinking. I don’t know. Is this guy taking it seriously anymore? He can do whatever he wants, apparently, but we also don’t have to consider him a really elite fighter, and he needs to prove that to us again.
“I am not under the belief that Conor McGregor is ever going to fight regularly.
“I just saw he came out saying, ‘I’m going to fight three or four times in the next year.’ That ain’t going to happen. He’s fought four times in six years.
“That’s crazy talk. I’m not even convinced he’s [going to end up] fighting Michael Chandler.”
