Viktor Gyokeres is proof that even Brighton’s flops have the potential to become Premier League stars.

The Swedish forward has ripped it up since moving to Coventry in 2021 however he wasn’t so fortunate during his three years on the south coast after joining from IF Brommapojkarna in 2018.

While the striker will be keen to see off Luton to earn promotion with the Sky Blues this weekend, Gyokeres will no doubt attract plenty of Premier League interest.

It’s understood that Brighton inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the deal taking him to the Ricoh Arena, meaning that the Seagulls could profit from interest in a player who, according to a Coventry City legend, might be in the top flight next season regardless of what happens this weekend.

Steve Ogrizovic, speaking to BoyleSports about the Championship Play Off final odds, said: “Viktor Gyokeres has for me been the standout striker in the league.

“I know he’s not scored as many goals as Chuba Akpom at Middlesbrough, but the way he leads the line and the improvement he’s made over the years has been incredible and he deserves that stage.

“We’ve got a midfield player in Gustavo Hamer, who started the season not very well but he’s been amazing since then. I’m trying to be as unbiased as possible.

“So I think both of those players definitely are bound for the Premier League, if not with Coventry with somebody else.”

While Gyokeres did make eight appearances in his short time or the Seagulls, scoring one goal in the process, it was when he joined Coventry on loan that his career really took off.

Five goals in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign was enough to convince the Sky Blues to sign the player for a fee believed to be less than £1million, before scoring 18 in his first full season with the club.

It was an impressive tally for a side who finished 12th that season, meaning that a surprise promotion push was always going to see his influence grow, something that he managed with 22 goals and 11 assists as Coventry finished in fifth-place in the table.

While that tally was second to Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom, there’s no doubt that Gyokeres is very much the man to watch for Premier League fans going into this weekend and beyond.
