Inter Miami’s new boss Gerardo Martino once admitted to teaching Lionel Messi ‘nothing’ during their time together at Barcelona.
Martino spent one season as season as head coach at the Nou Camp in 2013/2014 but endured a difficult year after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and missing out on the La Liga title to Atletico Madrid on the last day of the season.
With just a Spanish Super Cup to his name, Martino left his role the following summer to join Argentina as their new boss.
His time at Barcelona had been far from easy, with the experienced coach struggling to handle the global superstars within his squad, including Messi who held tremendous influence with the Catalan giants.
This led to a rather bizarre acknowledgement about the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner when asked by Argentine newspaper Clarin, quoted by Marca, what he’d taught Messi during their time together.
He said: “Nothing. Nothing at all. Not to him or to Barca.”
Martino later added: “I didn’t make any mark on Barcelona, it was a bubble in my career in terms of what I did as a coach.
“I went to a team that always won and didn’t win anything while I was there. The Supercopa is next to nothing for Barcelona.
“All I learned in Barcelona was about being surrounded by stars, by the best in the world.”
He then added: “I made some monumental mistakes with Barcelona. I’ll tell you in another life.”
Of course, the duo will now be working together again at Inter Miami, where they’ll be hoping to enjoy genuine success in the MLS.
Whether Martino can teach him anything this time around remains to be seen.
