England vs Ukraine predictions

England still have seven qualifiers left to contest before Euro 2024, but they have already taken a huge step towards booking their place at next summer’s tournament in Germany.

Italy away represented the toughest of all eight assignments in Group C, and Gareth Southgate’s side had to face the reigning European champions in Naples in their very first fixture.

Yet goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane earned England a 2-1 win on Thursday, sending them top of the table going into matchday two.

And there is a decent chance that Gareth Southgate’s side will not vacate first place for the remainder of the campaign. Relatively kind fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia await in June, so another victory on Sunday would put England in a commanding position.

The top two in each group will advance to the European Championship, but Southgate will be determined to progress in first place.

Euro 2024 could be a case of ‘now or never’ for the England manager, who has guided his country to one final, one semi-final and one quarter-final in his three tournaments at the helm.

Southgate’s contract with the national team expires at the end of next summer and he will be desperate to get his hands on a trophy before he leaves the job.

England should not get ahead of themselves, of course, but a win this weekend would leave them in control of Group C.

England vs Ukraine betting tips

England should prove too strong for Ukraine on Sunday, as the Three Lions seek to take control of Group C.

England/England half-time/full-time – 4/5 (bet365)

England’s performance against Italy was hugely impressive. They were utterly dominant in the opening 45 minutes and could easily have led by more than two goals at the interval.

Italy halved the deficit early in the second period and pushed for an equalizer thereafter, but England successfully held on for their first win in the country since 1961. It was also Italy’s first defeat in European Championship qualification for 41 matches, further underlining the scale of the achievement.

The Azzurri’s triumph in the final of Euro 2020 was patently more consequential, but the win at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona showed that England are more than a match for any other team on the continent on their day – a fact they also proved in a narrow 2-1 loss to France at World Cup 2022.

England showed two sides to their game on Thursday, producing some fantastic football in the first half before demonstrating ample grit and character after the break.

This should be a more straightforward assignment for Southgate’s side. Ukraine are a decent team but they will struggle to avoid defeat at Wembley.

If England can score the first goal early on – just like they did against Italy – this could be a long evening for the away team.

England to score in both halves – Evens (bet365)

Southgate has been in charge of England for almost seven years now, yet the jury is still out on the former Middlesbrough head coach.

His record at major tournaments is more noteworthy than that of the vast majority of his predecessors, but critics have two major complaints about him.

The first is what they perceive as excessive tactical caution. Southgate is regularly accused of sending his teams out with the handbrake on. The second is a questionable record of in-game management at decisive moments, such as in the final of the last European Championship.

There certainly have been times where Southgate has not been sufficiently adventurous, but overall that particular grievance seems overblown.

England certainly did not lack ambition on Thursday, when they went out and played on the front foot from the very first whistle.

We should see more of the same this weekend. Ukraine were thumped 4-0 by England in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, and although they have improved since then, an attack-minded display from the hosts could see them score in both halves of this encounter.

Harry Kane to score first – 13/5 (bet365)

Kane made history last time out, becoming England’s outright leading goalscorer of all time after notching his 54th goal for his country.

That is a tremendous achievement, not least because it has only taken the Tottenham Hotspur striker 81 appearances to overtake Wayne Rooney.

Kane kept his cool from the penalty spot against Italy, but that was only part of a top-tier performance from Southgate’s skipper.

Kane held the ball up expertly, fed his team-mates in promising positions and won pressure-relieving free-kicks in a brilliant all-round center-forward display.

Southgate is likely to make one or two changes to his team for the visit of Ukraine, but it would be a surprise if Kane was one of the players to drop out.

The rule of this England side is that the 29-year-old starts whenever he is fit, so we can expect to see his name on the team sheet on Sunday.

Rice opened the scoring against Italy but a price of 13/5 on Kane doing so this weekend looks very tempting indeed.

The Spurs striker is a major threat from open play, and the fact he takes penalties for his country only increases his chances of breaking the deadlock.
