Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld’s brilliant stoppage-time goal saw Royal Antwerp win the Belgian Pro League in truly dramatic style.

The centre-back netted in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to seal Antwerp a 2-2 draw Genk on Sunday, a result which sees them come out on top by a point.

They needed just a point to seal the title but looked set to bottle it when Bryan Heynen put the home side 2-1 up on 75 minutes.

But Antwerp-born Alderweireld’s crack-a-jack from the edge of the box flew into the top left-hand corner of the Genk net, a result which also took the title away from Genk’s grasp.

Genk were only in the title race ascendancy for a brief period with Union Saint-Gilloise top until they conceded an 89th-minute equaliser at home to Club Brugge, before collapsing to a 3-1 defeat.

In the end it was Antwerp, coached by former Netherlands midfielder Mark van Bommel, who held their nerve thanks to Alderweireld’s moment of magic.

Alderwerield has enjoyed a fine career, representing Spurs for six years, however, there were no pieces of silverware to show for his efforts in north London.

The 34-year-old becomes the latest name to leave Tottenham and win a trophy with Erik Lamela winning the Europa League with Sevilla, while Spurs loanee Bryan Gil also collected a winners’ medal.

Meanwhile, former manager Nuno Espirito Santo guided Al Ittihad to the Saudi Pro League title, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
