As the season winds down, so Gareth Southgate has stepped up, and announced his squad for the Malta and North Macedonia qualifiers.

The latter of those is a home fixture at Old Trafford, a tasty little morsel could be buried within the details of who’s in and who’s out – it might be Harry Maguire’s last home game at that stadium?

Maguire is just part of the story, because Gareth’s entire go-to spine have massive decisions to make.

Declan Rice won’t be able to resist the call of the Champions League, Harry Kane is in his last year at Tottenham and Jordan Pickford’s position as England’s No 1 will evaporate if Everton are relegated.

Spurs are interested in Pickford because ‘there’s an agreement he can be sold’ if relegated? So ‘where Jordan?’ would seem a valid question to ask.

But that is still a minimum of 90 minutes away from being answered. An hour and a half or so that could bring to an end six years of sticking around with the Toffees. Pickford’s career has actually been quite the journey, and over 12 years in the making.

Starting at Sunderland, and with regular loans to clubs like Darlington, Alfreton and Carlisle as stops along the way to the top flight. Now 29, he’s reaching his classic peak goalkeeping years. And unlikely to want to let those slip through his gloves.

Well, perhaps a former old school centre-half can help his keeper out? When Sean Dyche arrived 17 games ago in the blue half of Liverpool, Everton were in the bottom three.

For his eighteenth, they are two points above the drop and with their fate in their own, and Jordan’s aforementioned hands, with a home game against safely ensconced Bournemouth.

So perhaps at the end of this final, fateful day, the talk will end up being just that, about Pickford’s removal from Everton?
