'I think we might see an upset in this one'

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia finally meet this evening in one of the biggest fights of the year.

Both boxers are in their primes, have terrific knockout ratios and are unbeaten making the Las Vegas bout a mouth-watering clash.

Davis and Garcia have 45 KO’s between them in their 51 fights

Davis has the advantage in terms of experience, having previously won world titles in the super featherweight division, and he has knocked out all but two opponents he has faced.

But, Garcia is significantly taller, he is known for his lightning-fast hands and he packs a punch, too.

It has all the makings of a classic, with pride, unbeaten records and the entire purse on the line.

Going into the fight, Davis is the favourite with the bookies, but most fighters, trainers and promoters have this one a lot closer.

Jermall Charlo – Middlweight champion

While not predicting whether there will be a knockout, Charlo, the two-weight unbeaten champion, says it’s Garcia’s.

He’s so confident, he claimed to have bet $10k on the result.

Tony Bellew – Former cruiserweight world champion

“Both are excellent fighters and if they do what they do well then, I think it’s going to come down to who has the most on the night,” Bellew wrote in his column for DAZN.

“For me, that man is Davis and that’s just because he has so much power and I think he’ll land a huge shot some point late in the fight.

“Garcia will start quick, and I expect him to be in front when the fight gets into the later rounds, but Davis will be patient and when he does find the target of Garcia, I think that’ll be enough to end a memorable encounter. I can’t wait.”

Roy Jones Jr – Former four weight world champion

“First of all my hat goes off to both fighters for taking a fight like this at times like this, they’re not caring about their 0, they care about what the fans want to see and I applaud them,” Jones Jr told iD Boxing.

“Tank has a lot more tools than people think and Garcia is a much better fighter than people think.

“Garcia has been dropped by [Luke Campbell], who is not a bad fighter either, but if [Campbell] can drop him then we know Tank can drop him.

“But, how much punishment will Tank endure before he drops him, so the point is who can get their game plan in action first.

“If Garcia can get comfortable boxing Tank and keeping him on the outside, then Garcia can win the fight.

“If he gets comfortable and relaxes and runs low on engine towards the end of the fight, Tank knows how to become and dog and start walking you down.

“If he gets to that point without too much damage, he can get to Garcia, so it’s a pick-em fight.”

Joe Joyce – Olympic silver medallist and heavyweight contender

“I’m picking ‘Tank’ because I think he’s very patient when he’s fighting and he’s looking to land that big shot,” Joyce told talkSPORT.

“Whereas Ryan Garcia he’s the faster puncher and he’s going to be peppering him, but I think Tank will be patient and wait to nail him with something.

“I think it’s a 50/50 fight and it will be great to watch, but I think Gervonta Davis is edging it for me.”

Deontay Wilder – Former WBC heavyweight champion

“I’m more relatable to ‘Tank’ and how he came up, the rise through the concrete type of thing. I’m closer to him,” Wilder told ESNews.

“To me, it just seems like ‘Tank’ wants it more. I’ve seen him grow into what he is. So I’m going to move for him.

“But Ryan Garcia’s doing his thing, and I wish them both well. At the end of the fight, I hope we’ve had something like Caleb Plant vs David Benavidez, where there are no losers.”

Eddie Hearn – Boxing promoter

At first, Hearn tipped Tank on the DAZN Boxing Show, as he said: “He’s gonna get hit against Ryan Garcia, right? Ryan Garcia is very long, he has very fast hands.

“Where he [Davis] struggled a little bit against Hector Garcia with the range.

“Well Ryan Garcia has even more range than Hector Garcia, and he punches harder.

“I give Ryan Garcia a shot in this fight, no question about it. But if you’re asking me who wins, I say ‘Tank’ Davis.”

Later, however, in an interview with ESNEWS, Hearn did a U-turn with his prediction, saying: “I’m a big ‘Tank’ Davis fan. I really rate him as a fighter… He’s a special fighter.

“The problem is Ryan’s resume is quite weak in general… and ‘Tank’ I think has been in harder fights against better opposition on the bigger stages.

“But, the one thing I will say is, I’m quite surprised that the people in boxing that know them well give Ryan a fantastic chance in the fight. People like Devin [Haney] and Shakur [Stevenson] – they rate Ryan Garcia, so he’s obviously a tremendous fighter.

“I’m gonna go with Ryan Garcia. I’m gonna switch my pick.”

Devin Haney – Undisputed lightweight world champion

Having sparred both men in the past, Haney has extra insight into this fight and he has predicted in an interview with iD Boxing: “Ryan has the height, the speed, the length and all that, but Tank has that IQ, experience and power.

“The safe bet is Tank but you cannot sleep on Ryan, he definitely can punch, he’s shown that, so we gotta see.”

Bridges believes Garcia’s power is underestimated

Ebanie Bridges – IBF bantamweight world champion

“This is very hard to predict and it’s one we all need to see, because it is 50/50,” Bridges told talkSPORT.

“I have a feeling that Ryan Garcia could win. I really do believe that he has underestimated power.

“We all know ‘Tank’ has power, he’s a tank, but I think that maybe Ryan Garcia’s power can be underestimated and I don’t know how lightly ‘Tank’ is taking him.

“Garcia is so fast as well and it’s a very exciting fight, so I’m going to say that Ryan Garcia wins that, but I may get a lot of people going against me saying that.”

Amir Khan – Former unified super lightweight world champion

Khan has warned Garcia to avoid the power shots of Davis, as he told Fight Hub TV: “Ryan Garcia has to keep it long.

“And every time Tank tries to come in he has to take a little step out – [those] inches are gonna make a massive difference.

“Counter him every time. Throw them hard shots in. Every shot that Ryan throws has to be hard and accurate.

“He can’t let Tank smother him, or get too close, because that’s when he’s in trouble.

“Ryan has to have strong legs, have good feet, keep it long, keep it moving left to right… don’t let Tank settle, because once he settles he’s going to let those big bombs off.”

Taylor thinks Davis’s boxing IQ will see him emerge victorious

Josh Taylor – WBO super lightweight world champion

“I see Tank winning that one,” said Taylor when speaking to Boxing Social. “I just think better boxing brain, better boxing ability, more power, cuter in the way he moves and better boxing IQ.

“I don’t know about him stopping Garcia, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does but I’m going to maybe go for Tank on points.”

Johnny Fisher – Unbeaten heavyweight prospect

Fisher is really looking forward to this fight, as he told talkSPORT: “This is one that’s captured my eye a little bit, I think Ryan Garcia [will win], he’s got the speed.

“A lot of people say Garcia is a pretty boy, but just because you look pretty or handsome it doesn’t mean you don’t have that grittiness.

“Perhaps Gervonta Davis has had that upbringing and he’s a little bit tougher and more rugged, but we’ll see on the night. I’d like to see Ryan Garcia do it.”

Freddie Roach – Former trainer of Manny Pacquiao.

“I think I might see an upset in this one,” Roach told ProBoxTV News. “Davis is the puncher. But Garcia is a very good boxer, and a boxer versus a puncher matchup, you can’t ask for anything better. It should be a really good fight.

“Davis is a slow starter sometimes and it’s very important for Garcia to start early. Stand in there, use his height and box.”

Shane Mosley – Former three weight world champion

“I’m leaning towards Garcia because he’s bigger, not because I believe he’s a better fighter technically,” Mosley told Sporting News.

“I believe he’s bigger and he has the goods to be the bigger fighter. I think he can hit Tank with shots that he’s never been hit with, and I think the size, height, and speed is gonna be a problem.”
