Jamie Carragher aims jab at Gary Neville, who suggests Jurgen Klopp has ‘shielded’ Liverpool’s owners

It’s no secret that Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville haven’t always seen eye to eye.

This was very much apparent on Monday night as the former Premier League duo locked horns on Twitter over Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s owners.

talkSPORT understands that a third bid from the Reds worth up to £45million for Romeo Lavia was rejected by Southampton.

He is a key target for Klopp’s midfield rebuild this summer but with the new season starting this Friday, they are yet to strike a deal.

Liverpool legend Carragher labelled the transfer saga ’embarrassing’ and suggested his former club move for Chelsea-linked Moises Caicedo instead.

His Sky Sports colleague Neville opted to respond with: “Do you now agree that Klopp has shielded your owners for the last 5-6 years?”

However, Carragher clearly disagreed with his co-pundit and hit back with a lengthy explanation about Liverpool’s situation.

Carragher said: “Gary you haven’t a clue what’s going on at Liverpool! The owners have a self sustaining model that Klopp bought into and produced miracles!

“Part of that was a transfer department that was the envy of Europe. That has now gone with Klopp running the club from top to bottom.

“LFC have had three DOF’s [Directors of Football] in 18 months, the current one who came out of retirement to do the job for this summer, he’s a close contact of the manager.

“Liverpool’s wage bill is £150million more than Arsenal’s a season. Just do the maths. Liverpool don’t have an investor [Peter Lim] like you do at Salford, where you and lads just get on a plane at the end of the season to beg him to spend more money!!”

Liverpool have by no means been quiet in the market this summer having brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai respectively.

However, now new faces have failed to arrive since the latter became a Red at the beginning of July and have since lost Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia.

They currently have the joint-smallest squad size in the Premier League with West Ham on 22 players, with their opening weekend trip to Chelsea just six days away.
