That goal was Messi’s 496th goal in Europe’s top five divisions, overtaking the record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi achieved the feat in 577 matches, while it took Ronaldo 626 to score his 495.

It was the 35-year-old’s 16th Ligue 1 goal of the season and was a vital one for PSG, ensuring his time in France is likely to end on something of a high note.

It has been a difficult season for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner in the French captial.

He has been the target of fans’ frustration, often being booed and whistled during games.

The Argentina World Cup winner was also suspended by the club for taking an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

He is out of contract in the summer and it is seemingly unlikely he will stay.

A return to Barcelona or joining Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia are among the options.
