Punchestown Festival betting tips

4.15: Diverge 4/1 – Champion Novice Hurdle

With Impaire Et Passe not contesting this with Facile Vega having won the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle over 2m5f it’s an easy enough five-runner field to go through.

Facile Vega came second in the Supreme at Cheltenham Festival behind Marine Nationale and looks an easy winner for this Grade 1.

Mullins dominates this race with the top three in the market and it’s very conceivable to see Facile Vega return to Ireland and return to winning ways against his stablemates.

But Diverge represents a 4/1 shot yet only finished 2¾l behind Facile Vega at Cheltenham and is an ideal contender for value money rather than siding with the odds-on favourite – which could be a constant at this year’s festival.

Any sort of improvement could see a closer finish than expected and he’s still exposed with just three runs over hurdles so far.

5.25: Energumene 2/5 – Champion Chase

This is the 2m William Hill Champion Steeplechase which features the 176-rated Energumene as the leading favourite.

Of the few races with odds available at this very early stage Energumene is by far and away the shortest and will probably remain among the shortest price for the whole festival at 2/5.

The Willie Mullins-trained horse won the Champion Chase in spectacular fashion to Captain Guinness in second, by an impressive ten lengths.

Edwardstone didn’t quite fire that day but there’s no threat of a rematch and it’s hard to fancy anything else in this race regardless.

6.35: Sir Gerhard 3/1 – Champion Novice Chase

This is an intriguing battle for these great novice chasers who are all taking on a step up in distance to their usual trips.

Classic Getaway has attempted 3m before but was pulled up, but this was in the tough Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham Festival in 2022.

And he remains an unknown as a chaser having just his second run over fences.

Sir Gerhard is one of just two runners to attempt 3m over fences.

He’s now attempting fences for just the fourth time at Punchestown – just 17 days after placing second at Fairyhouse.

The Cheveley Park horse was a 3/1 shot at Cheltenham Festival in the 3m Brown Advisory but jumped poorly despite making headway a few fences out.

He did win a point to point in 2019 but another entry into this race suggests the staying power is there and his jumping will undoubtedly improve now with experience which should put him right up there.

Epsom betting tips

3.00: Educator 11/4

A few make decent claims to see this out but it’s the favourite who looks the most likely to win well.

Still lightly raced and was only seen three times last season which included a close win at Newmarket.

After 170 days break bumped into Okeechobee who was too good in the Juddmonte colours and went up to a rating of 102 as a result.

Educator went on to only place tenth on his next run at Newmarket and was later gelded and has been waited with since to make a good seasonal debut for the King and the Queen Consort.

Plenty of rains has hit the south of England across the Monday afternoon and evening which should keep the ground good to soft.

Likely to improve for trainer William Haggas in the capable hands of Tom Marquand.

3.35: Sir Rumi 9/1

Made a good run on his first outing this season at Doncaster when second to Bucephalus but didn’t impress at Kempton next time, on just his fourth run on the all-weather.

Back to turf is a bonus but more so is the booking of jockey William Buick.

He also goes back up in trip from 1m2f and 1m3f to his usual 1m4f which saw him placed behind Israr in October and win at Newbury in September 2022.

Amo Racing horses have been running extremely well and there’s definite scope this horse should improve this season.

9/1 odds at least make him a worthwhile shot each-way despite carrying the top-weight.

All odds correct at time of writing
