Nathan Lyon is one of the most recognisable Australian cricketers, but at times, you will hear people call him ‘Garry’.
The 35-year-old’s participation in the remainder of The Ashes is in doubt after suffering a significant calf injury, but should he feature, you will hear this odd name.

And Lyon’s unusual nickname has stuck with teammates, opposition and fans.
Why is Nathan Lyon called Garry?
Lyon has former international teammate Matthew Wade to thank for the bizarre name.
In 2016, Wade started calling the spinner ‘Garry’ after former AFL [Australian Football League] player Garry Lyon.
The Aussie rules icon captained Melbourne Football Club from 1991-99.

It is such an unusual name, but it has caught on and is now regularly used.
When Lyon is bowling, you can hear his teammates calling him Garry, while the English crowd have used it as a way to have some light-hearted banter with the spinner.
