Star Trek: Picard: Jean-Luc Picard tries to save Dr. Beverly Crusher’s son – who may be his

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard is put in an awkward position as he tried to hold off an enemy bounty hunter to save the life of Dr. Beverly Crusher’s son Jack, all while wondering if Jack might be his son, on the second episode of Star Trek: Picard season three, titled Disengage.

The episode opens two weeks before the end of last week’s episode, the season premiere, to reveal what had happened to the doctor (Gates McFadden), who previously sent out a distress signal to Picard.

As a group of security forces hail the ship, Jack (Ed Speleers) tells them that the vessel is there to help people suffering from an illness on the nearby planet, but he doesn’t have the paperwork to give him access to the quarantined zone.

The security team boards him for an inspection, but suspects he’s trying to bribe them with alcohol, before he unveils weapons to help them take out warlords on the planet below as he helps the sickened refugees.

‘Reach out to the marked woman. We found him,’ says the head of the security team before stepping off the vessel.

The show cuts two weeks in the future to when Picard and Riker are meeting with Jack as he explains about the team of men dressed as Starfleet members who boarded the ship.

They find what appears to be an enemy craft hovering in space. Jack explains that he and his mother have been running from that craft, but now there ship is running out of fumes and it is dangerously close.

‘We have to make contact,’ Picard says, while the computer explains that the mysterious ship is targeting them with its weapon systems, suggesting it means to blast them to pieces.

Commander Annika Hansen (Jeri Ryan), also known as Seven of Nine, is back on the Titan as the crew learns of the enemy vessel, but Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick) orders his crew not to try to save Picard.

He said the Titan was an ‘exploratory’ vessel that couldn’t win in a fight, therefore it would not assist Picard and Riker.

Jack rushed to get a shuttle ready to send the injured Beverly to the Titan, where she might be able to get help, but the enemy vessel begins firing upon them, damaging the shuttle just as her vital signs are starting to fail.

Meanwhile, Raffi Muskier (Michelle Hurd) looks devastated as she watches a news report about a terrorist attack on the Starfleet recruitment building.

She had learned about the attack in the previous episode, but her warnings came too late to prevent the bombing.

In a secure chat with her handler, she bemoans her inability to save the 117 dead people.

The handler replies that the investigation was closed after a suspect was found, but Raffi says the man is likely a patsy, and even if he was involved, he is far from the heart of the terrorist cell.

Her request for an in-person meeting to understand why the investigation was being scuttled were denied, but she vowed to find out who was responsible without Starfleet’s assistance.

Back on the Titan, Seven tried to get Shaw to take action after the ship detected signs that Picard’s vessel had been attacked, though he refused.

‘Sir, you could be the hero who saved heroes, or you could be remembered for being the captain who let two legends die. It’s your call, sir,’ she says.

Back with Picard and Riker, Jack is trying to strategize their next moves while Picard is occupied with setting up gadgets.

‘Does the legendary admiral have any ideas?’ Jack asks

‘I’m not strategizing, I’m safeguarding,’ Picard replies.

Then Jack is about to be beamed up to the enemy ship, until Picard turns on one of his gadget, which prevents him from being transported, alerting him that the invaders are hoping to get Jack on their ship alive.

‘If they can’t get you out, they’re coming in,’ Riker warns just before the computer announces that intruders have boarded their ship.

A group of masked soldiers begin firing down a corridor, but Riker slides a small bomb toward them that explodes, keeping them at bay.

Although they have subdued the forces, the ship is then swept up in a tractor beam carrying it toward the much larger enemy ship.

Riker plans to devise an anti-beam to counteract the pull, but Jack informs him that the ship no longer has the necessary technology in its weakened state.

But as the ship is dangerously close to being destroyed and is about to be swept up into the larger craft, the Titan jets into the path of the beam, severing it.

Seven and Shaw then attempt to beam the four passengers aboard, but Picard’s transport inhibitors are preventing the process, so he fires his phaser at them. All are successfully beamed aboard the Titan.

Back with Raffi, she meets her ex-husband Jae Hwang to get an audience with a gangster who may have information on the terrorist attack.

Jae is furious that she’s more interested in meeting the gangster than seeing their son Gabe. He offers to connect her to the source, or to help her see her son again, but not both. Her silence indicates that she chose information on the gangster

On the Titan, Captain Shaw is hailed by the enemy vessel and its leader Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer).

She says Jack has ‘broken a number of laws both inside and outside Federation space.’

Because he has a ‘sizable bounty’ on his head, she wants to take him, but Shaw says Starfleet does not negotiate with bounty hunters.

She shows that she is serious by lowering her shields so that the Titan can scan all of the weapons aimed at it.

She gives them one hour to turn over Jack, and threatens that she’ll blow them out of the sky. To show that she’s serious, she uses her ship’s tractor beam to toss the recently abandoned ship at the Titan, destroying it and tearing through the Titan’s hull.

Shaw meets up with his new passengers and reveals that Jack is a fugitive wanted for crimes under multiple fake names.

Seven tries to tell him that the enemy ship isn’t a traditional bounty hunter ship and is something more sinister, but he won’t hear it, and instead removes her from duty for insubordination.

Riker urges Shaw not to give up Jack, as the enemy ship is a ‘guillotine,’ but Shaw says the rules of Starfleet tell him to preserve his ship and crew first.

When Riker is alone with Picard, he seems to imply that Jack may be his son, though Picard uges him not to ‘speculate.’

In a private audience in Jack’s cell, Picard confronts Jack about his alleged crimes. Jack claims he’s a doctor helping people needing medical supplies in rebellion zones, though he admits he is also a thief willing to steal the supplies and other items needed to bribe his way into war zones.

He shocks Picard when he says his mother Beverly is his partner in all of his deeds, and he berates Picard for not keeping up with his mother.

‘Who is your father?’ Picard interrupts, but Jack shouts back, ‘I never had one!’

Elsewhere, Raffi makes her way into a club as she continues her investigation. She meets a bouncer and tells him she’s there to see the gangster Sneed, who she believes is responsible for the terrorist attack.

She convinces Sneed that she’s no longer with Starfleet as she pours out a bag of riches in front of him in exchange for knowledge about a deal he may have put together to get the technology for the attack.

She mentions the Romulan, t’Luco, who is being blamed for the bombing, but she claims he couldn’t have done it because she works for him.

He urges her to take a truth serum to ensure she is who she claims to be. She’s able to fight it and to claim that she still works for t’Luco, which Sneed says is an artifact of tolerance she built up from previously being an addict, as he reveals he knows she doesn’t work for t’Luco as he pulls the Romulan’s severed head from a box.

She then stabs Sneed in the hand as another attacker breaks into the meeting and begins slicing the guards to pieces before decapitating Sneed.

‘I told you, do not engage,’ the man says as he carries her out, revealing that he is her old friend, the Klingong Worf (Michael Dorn), who was also working as her handler.

Back on the Titan, Picard urges Shaw not to give up Jack Crusher with 15 minutes left.

But in his prison cell, Jack is able to use a hidden gadget to disengage the shield holding him in his cell. He attacks the guard watching him and runs out onto the ship.

Meanwhile, Riker learns that Beverly is out of danger, and he tries to reverse her sedative to speak with her.

On the bridge, Vadic hails Shaw and Picard again and reveals that her vessel is named the Shrike after an Earth bird. She warns them not to delay, as her ship will disable the Titan bit by bit until they are killed.

Despite being removed from command, Seven of Nine finds Jack as he draws a gun on her and orders her to get the transporter ready for him. Picard explains to Shaw that Jack is trying to give himself up to save his mother.

Shaw orders the transporters to be unlocked to allow Jack to leave, but then a revived Beverly steps onto the bridge with Riker, as Picard looks pained to see his ex.

He then shouts to the crew to belay Shaw’s order, and they obey him despite him being retired. He explains that the look from Beverly confirmed that Jack was his son.

He hails the Shrike to announce he is engaging in battle before jetting away. Vadic lets out a dented giggle and orders her crew to follow the fleeing Titan as the episode concludes abruptly.
