Young horticulturist, 21, is nominated for Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Award


Younger horticulturist Danny Poland brightened up his village and put a smile on his neighbours’ faces during lockdown by planting dozens of sunflowers.

Now Mr Poland, 21, has been nominated for a Queen Consort’s Coronation Champions Award, organised by the Royal Voluntary Support and backed by the Each day Mail.

Mr Poland mobilised residents to sort a Village in Bloom group, which noticed Irthington in Cumbria decide on up a Silver Gilt in past year’s Britain in Bloom competitiveness, whilst Mr Poland acquired a Younger People Winner Award. 

And in the course of previous summer’s drought, he shipped between 150 to 200 litres of rainwater a day to the bouquets he planted about the village on a trailer connected to his bicycle.

He reported it was ‘fantastic’ to be place forward for the Coronation Champions award.

Mr Poland, who works at Larch Cottage Nurseries while caring for his disabled mother, was nominated by neighbour and Mail reader Gill Burns, 65. 

She reported: ‘The village has really benefited from his inspiration and involvement.’

Five hundred champions will receive a pin, a certification from Camilla and an invitation to a single of the Coronation gatherings.
